Meeting Tonight!

We will be meeting tonight as was listed on the Presidents calendar. We will be meeting at the Sam Baca Aquatic Center tonight. Gathering will start around 6:30 with the meeting called to order at 7:00 pm.

There are only 4 days left of our Concession Stand Project! Everyone is invited to stop by the SBAC and enjoy the last few available swim days! They are open all this week starting at 6:00 am and closing at 7:00 pm. Our concession stand runs from 1:00-5:00 (The general public swim session.)

School will be starting soon. Please become aware of school zones and bus crossings. Students will be out in large numbers starting on the first day of school August 16th! Crosswalks around Deming are faint and hard to see, it is the suggestion of this club that you contact the City of Deming and ask that these crosswalks be re-painted for the safety of our students!

Dolphins and Lions Together Again

Once again, the Luna Evening Lions will be sponsoring the Deming Dolphins Swim Team in their annual Swim Meet scheduled for tomorrow, July 16! Event kicks off at 9:00am. Please stop by the Sam Baca Aquatic Center to show your support! The Lions will have their snack bar open and they will feature hot dogs for only $1!

The Luna Evening Lions are proud to support the Deming Dolphins! This year, the Lions were able to provide $300 worth of prize ribbons and medals for the participants! We hope to see you tomorrow! LELC

Lions Are Swimming Pool Residents!

New information for all our readers!

There have been some changes and some important updates... I hope you will all benefit from this information:

* Our club has decided to change meeting locations! We will begin our new Lions Year by meeting at the Grand Motor Inn located at 1721 E. Pine St. Our first meeting there will be on July 12, 2011. Our last meeting for the 10-11 year will be at the swimming pool on June 28th. This will be Lion David's last meeting as president!

*Our club has been working very hard at the Sam Baca Aquatic Center since the end of August at the Lions Snack Bar! We have been doing very well and we are very grateful to the City of Deming and the staff of the pool for all their help and support! Come by and visit us! We have the best prices in town! Hot dogs available for only $1!

* The swimming pool will be offering a "FREE Swimming Day" on July 9th from 1:00 to 4:15 to the general public! We hope you will all join us that day as well for Ice Cold Water and Drinks, Hot Dogs, Chips, and other snacks!

A message from the President:
For the past two years, I have had the honor of serving as president of the Luna Evening Lions Club (formerly Deming Wildcats). Through my 2 terms as president, we have purchased over 10 pairs of glasses for local citizens (mostly children), participated in the support of Class Act, donated hundreds of dollars to the Healing House of Deming in the form of food baskets, worked countless hours at the Swimming Pool Snack Bar, continued our tradition of the Annual Easter Egg Hunt, Duck Race Parade, Christmas Light Parade, initiated Deming's first Dog Show, donated a shopping cart full of supplies to the Humane Society, and helped several students and school organizations to fulfill their commitments as well. One of the proud traditions we have started is supporting the residents of our local nursing home. This is one of our proudest accomplishments! In so many places the elderly are left alone and neglected; it makes my heart happy that we will not let that happen here! I also believe that I may be leaving out some very important accomplishments-- unintentionally!

I could not have been able to serve to my best ability with out the support of the club! The officers have been an asset to our club and we are lucky to have such wonderful people here to server our community! I would like to especially that Lion Toby Soderberg for all his support and countless hours of help! I would also like to thank PDG Lion LeRoy Rapp (Deming Club President) for all his help and wonderful advice and friendship! We would have been lost without these two dedicated Lions.

As I transition back into the Secretary position and add the position of Treasurer to my Lionistic resume, I hope that I can continue to support this club to the best of my ability. I love every member very dearly and I am glad to have such a great addition to my family. I know Lion Toby has some great plans for our club in the coming year and I look forward to working with him! Keep it up Luna Evening Lions! We have survived and prospered more than we were ever expected to! Our motto is true, We DO Serve!

Long Time Coming

Good Evening Lions everywhere! As I am certain you have noticed, I have not posted in quite some time. I'm sure it has irritated some of you, but I hope to rectify that tonight.

Our club is becoming more and more involved within the last few months, and for that, I am very happy!

We have been visiting the nursing home almost monthly and playing several games of BINGO with them. They are such good sports and seem to really enjoy the time they spend with us. Many thanks to those LIONS who are always present!

Our 4th annual Easter Egg Hunt went off without a hitch this past Saturday! OUR LARGEST CROWD YET!! It was great to see all those children having such a great time! Over 1000 plastic eggs were hidden and $50 in prizes was given away!

Our 2nd annual DOG SHOW will take place on May 7th at 2:00pm at Deming Intermediate School. Admission is free for viewing-- bring a can of dog or cat food if you can-- and registration is $20 per dog. All doggies are welcome!

Our New Officers for the 11-12 Lion Year are as follows:

Just an update for our online community:

We have been working the concession stand at the Sam Baca Aquatic Center all summer. Thank you Deming for your support!

We will be sending $100 to LCIF, $50 to NMLEF, and $50 to The Leaderdog Foundation!

PDG LeRoy Rapp was presented with the President's Appreciation Medal at the meeting last night. He is a great asset to LCI and an even greater asset to Deming Lions! We are so proud to call him friend.

We will be sponsoring the Deming Dolphins Swim Meet THIS SATURDAY at the Sam Baca Aquatic Center from 7am - 12noon. All Lions are welcome and encouraged to attend.

A New Name--- Same Club

We have successfully petitioned Lions International to change our name and they have approved the change. We are proud of our new name! Well, I'm finally updating the blog! I know it has been a while, but it has been an equally busy time the last few months!

Updates:

Dog Show: Went very well! Tremendous thanks to Lion Toby for his leadership and direction on this project and to Lion Nancy for her securing so many fantastic sponsors!
Easter Egg Hunt: A great community service project for all! We hid over 1,000 eggs this year again and it was fun! We had about 40 kids ages 18 months-12 years old participate! Lion Maria was brave enough to dress up as the "Easter Bunny" for us.
New Officers: At the last meeting, we voted on a new roster of officers for Lion Year 10-11. They are as follows:

Thank you to all Lions that showed for the bowling meeting. It was SO MUCH FUN! I hope that everyone enjoyed themselves as much as I did.

I wanted to let you all know that our Thanksgiving Baskets were delivered to three families on Tuesday, before the meeting. The families that were chosen were in really great need of food. If you have any questions about the baskets, please ask me or Lion Toby.

I am looking forward to the Light Parade! Remember, December 2 and 3 are decorating dates. Also, Secret Santa information has been exchanged. We will be exchanging gifts on December 18 at our Christmas Party!

A Meeting and A Member

The meeting of October 27 was a good one! We had a great discussion about community service, upcoming projects, and yes, even a new member! Lion Karen's son Will, has been helping our club for a while now. He loves being around us (poor guy). Well, we must be moving in the right direction, he submitted an application to the board of directors and was voted in!! Welcome, welcome, welcome to Lion Will!

We will be meeting at 6:30am at the Flea Market on November 7. All are welcome! Please bring your "Treasures".

Wow, what can I say? Last night's visit to Mimbres Memorial Hospital & Nursing Home was... great. The residents were so happy to see us! I arrived early to set up and one of the residents came in. She looked at me and my Lions shirt and shouted, "Oh good! The Lions club is here! I was hoping you'd come see us!" That was probably the proudest moment of my Lionship. Our club purchased $100 worth of "Bingo Prizes" for the nursing home. They play BINGO every other day and believe me, they love it! We played BINGO for an hour and I have to say, it was a really special time. I would like to thank the following Lions for going: Karen, Nancy, Wayne, LeRoy and guest Will Schalip. I know the residents were very happy yesterday night. I promised them that we'd be back soon to play. I hope we can make it!

Nursing Home Visit

What a great meeting tonight! Thank you all so much! I want to also thank our guests for enjoying a meal with us. It was great to see new faces! Another good note: We sold all our chocolate bars!!! Thank you to all!

Lion Bernie Chavez is our new Membership Director! I would like to welcome him to the post. I know he will do a great job!

Lion Karen Schalip is once again our chairwoman for the 2009 Christmas Light Parade! She is really excited and already has ideas for the float!

Lion Nancy Hollenbeck and Lion David Valenzuela are co-chairs for the Lions Dog Show. A "sponsor" registration form will be available at our next meeting, so that we can start to look for some awesome sponsors!

Lions,
I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you all publicly for all your dedication and support to the cause of Lions. Because of your hard work, we have accomplished the following: 1.) 7 pairs of glasses were purchased, 2.) The Luna Youth Football League and Deming Dolphin Swim Team were able to have an uninterrupted season. 3.) The cause of Lions has been spreading through our county and state. 4.) A young lady was able to visit New York City. She had never been out of the state of New Mexico! 5.) Donations were sent to the Leader Dog Foundation and NM Lions Band Foundation. 6.) Pre-School children of Luna county were able to have an eye screening because of our donation to the Deming Noon Lions club's new camera.
Though to some these accomplishments may seem small, we are reminded everyday that we are Lions and "We Serve!" Our club may be small. But we are committed to our cause and we hold our heads high as we work for our community.
Thank you to all members of our club. With special thanks to Lions Toby Soderberg, Nancy Hollenbeck, Karen Schalip, Wayne Krack, and PDG LeRoy Rapp without whom our club would have ceased to exist a year ago.

Flea Market

Thank you, thank you, thank you to all who brought items to sell! We made a good amount at the flea market. We will be able to do alot of good with what we made. Think about it this way: We worked for 4 hours. We made a nice profit! Not bad at all! Many Lions suggested doing this as a fundraiser a couple times a year. I think I agree.

Busy Meeting

Yesterday's meeting was a busy but very productive one. We welcomed 3 guests to our club meeting. Lion Ben Baca from the De Noche Lions in Las Cruces was a very happy guest at our meeting. Also, 2VDG from Arizona Lion Chip and his wife Lion Annie Kline stopped for a visit on their way back to Tombstone, AZ. The DWL were very pleased and honored to welcome these guests. Lion Toby's birthday was celebrated by all who attended.

There were so many fantastic people in Farmington this weekend. The entire state was represented very well. Five members of our club were in attendance; thats almost half! Please enjoy the pictures.

Now that we're all salivating, here's the deal. Our club is having a Spring Beef Raffle. Our local Pepper's Supermarket has graciously allowed us to raffle off gift certificates for the purchase of beef at their store! The prizes are as follows: 1st- $250.00* 2nd-$75.00* 3rd-$50.00*

A Great Breakfast!

Our Biscuits and Gravy breakfast was really delicious and a ton of fun! Many thanks to all fellow Lions that came from far and wide to eat and talk with us! A huge thank you to our local community as well for all your help and support. We would like to extend a HUGE thank you to K-Mart of Deming for their donations to our club for our fundraiser. As you all know, we are in need of funding for some of our Lionistic goals for this year (i.e. scholarships, Lions Band sponsorship, glasses, eye van, etc...).

Holiday Fun!

Our club celebrated the holidays with a fantastic party at the Holiday Inn today. ALL LIONS from our club were in attendance!!!! Also, Zone Chairs LeRoy Rapp and Phil Marvel were there to celebrate with us. Our club wishes to thank them so much for all their support through out this year. We wish them a great holiday season!
Lion Karen Schalip was surprised with a very special award pin for her great leadership as chairwoman of the Light Parade Float. She was awarded a great pin in the shape of a western boot with the LIONS emblem on it. It was great to see the surprise on her face!
With all the games we played, music, food, company....I can truly say that our party was a great success and loads of Lion Fun!
Our next regular meeting will be on January 13, 2009! A great way to start the new year! See you all then!

The Light Parade was great!

The Deming Christmas Light Parade went off with out a hitch on December 6th. One of 30 floats that proved to be one of the best light parades Deming has ever seen! All Lions had a great time! Many thanks to Lion Karen Schalip for her chairmanship of this committee. There have been some small date changes, so please see the updated schedule on the previous posting!

On behalf of the club, we would like to extend a deep THANK YOU to Lion Toby and his family for allowing us to meet at his house to get the float ready! The city of Deming may need to wear sunglasses as our float passes downtown Deming. Its going to be BRIGHT! We had a great BBQ and had a great time with each other! Thanks to Lion Bernie for all the good cooking! New Lion Chrisy Loya and Lion Toby Soderberg won a raffle prize each of a home made Christmas Light-Up Tree. We had such a great time! Lion Gov. Kitty Callender visited our club last night. We had a great turn out, so thank you to everyone for coming! There is a district 40 meeting in Socorro this Saturday. Please contact Lion Bryson for more information. We also welcomed a NEW Lion to our club last night, Lion Christy Loya! Lion Juanita Werner was presented her membership certificate last night by DG Kitty. Lion Juanita said, "I am just happy to be a Lion!" And we are happy to have her. The light parade is going to be a great thing. We are not going to meet again this month. We are going to meet December 2nd at Lion Toby's house. Please contact Lion David for more information. We will be getting the float ready. It will be a "Bring Your Own MEAT" BBQ. Lion Bernie will BBQ your meat for you, so bring your favorite cut of meat. Other food will be provided and all Deming Lions are welcome to attend. Also, mark your calendars: November 28 we will be having a gift wrapping table at K-Mart from 8:00am to 5:00 pm. October 28th Meeting

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!! We had such a great time at our last meeting. It was completely masquerade! We even voted in a new member! I want to thank everyone for wearing their masks and costumes to the meeting. I think without a dout the best costume goes to Lion Karen Schalip who made the best Ladybug ever! We want to welcome new Lion Juanita Werner to our club. She was voted on by unanimous consent of the club. Lion Juanita plays piano beautifully and volunteers her time with the DPS Choirs. She dressed as a flower pot for our meeting. Lion Karen was appointed as the Chairwoman for the Light Parade Committee. We will be meeting the week of the parade to get our float ready. We approved the purchase of a new pair of glasses for a middle school student, which we are very proud of. We are also in the process of working with the Deming Noon Lions to purchase a camera to screen elementary school students' vision. The next meeting will be a LIONS COLORS meeting. October 14th Meeting

Yesterday's meeting was so much FUN! I want to thank everybody for wearing their hats. It was great to see all the different types of hats that our Lions wore. But it was even more gratifying to see all the smiles! During yesterday's meeting, our club adopted its By-Laws and Constitution, approved entry into the Christmas Lighted Parade, and were given a presentation by PDG Lion LeRoy Rapp. Almost all members were present with only 2 absent. Our next meeting will be on October 28 and it will be a MASQUERADE meeting. Please come wearing a mask of some sort. NO FACE PAINTING! Masques only! If you have any ideas regarding the Light Parade Float, please get in contact with Lion David at dcvalenz@hotmail.com or Lion Karen. She can usually be found at the K-Mart eatery working very hard. Condolences

Our club would like to extend our deepest condolences and sympathy to the family of Lions Bernie and Virginia Chavez, and Lion Dina Marquez. Virginia and Dina's father, Abel Marquez, passed away yesterday morning October 6th. The Vigil and Rosary will be Wednesday October 8 at 7:00pm at St. Ann's Catholic Church. The funeral Mass will be at 10:00am on October 9th, also at St. Ann's. Abel will be remembered by our club for his GREAT sense of humour, GREAT dedication to his family, and his GREAT stories of times passed and present. He will also be remembered for his unique way of expressing his theories and ideas to all and any who would listen. The funeral arrangements are being handled by Baca's Funeral Chapels of Deming. World Sight Day!

Lions Clubs International will mark Lions World Sight Day in Arizona, USA, October 15-17. Lions members from Arizona and New Mexico will screen the eyes of hundreds of Native Americans on the Navajo Reservation in Window Rock, Arizona, and provide eyeglasses to those who need them. Lions will also arrange for follow-up medical care for those who need it. Lions plan to conduct two diabetes screenings for senior citizens, Hispanics and Native Americans in Phoenix and conduct an eye screening and distribute eyeglasses at the Arizona Lions Vision Center in Phoenix. This marks the first time that the major event of Lions World Sight Day will be held in Arizona.

Christmas Lighted Parade 2008

Lions, Its not to early to begin thinking about this. Lion Karen thought it might be a good idea for us to participate in the Kiwanis Club's Lighted Christmas Parade this year. It will be held on December 6th. Lion Karen has lots of great ideas for our float. Be prepared to talk about this at the next couple of meetings. It will be really good for us to get LIONS out there for everyone to see. The theme of the parade is "Christmas is __________." Please start to brain storm and we will discuss it soon. Thank You to all who helped at our Pancake Breakfast yesterday morning! We did very well. The crowd was small, but we had fun and raised some money to help out our community as much as we can! Special thanks to Guiding Lions Phil and Anna from De Noche Lions in Las Cruces for coming down and supporting us! We really appreciate your help! Also, of course, a special thanks to all who showed up to eat! We hope everyone enjoyed the food. It was made with lots of love. I hope to see everyone at our next meeting on October 14th. September 23 Meeting

Lions!
If you didn't make it to our last meeting, you missed a good (and short) one! First, we celebrated Lion Virginia's birthday--everyone sang and it was scary! Then we had a winner take all money raffle--Lion Dina won! (even though she was late!) Lion Toby provided a prize for a club raffle. It was a nice fleece blanket, two fall mugs, and a box of coco in a basket. Congrats to Lion Nancy for winning that! We approved payment of a pair of glasses and an eye exam for a young child who cannot afford them. Our club is proud to help him out. Everything is set for our breakfast this Sunday! Lions Toby, David, and Karen will be selling tickets at K-Mart this Saturday from 8:00am -12:00 noon. Here is one item of note, all Lions that attend the next meeting are required to wear a funny hat. The hat must be worn the whole meeting (except during the Pledge of Allegience) or Lion Tail Twister Nancy will fine that Lion $2.00!! However, regular Baseball caps are not a valid "funny hat". Also, if you don't wear it the whole meeting, the fine will still be imposed! So, pull out those "funny" hats that you all bought at the Duckraces, that hat you thought was a great buy when you were on vacation, or dad's hat that has been in the attick for years! This is your chance to show it off!
